David di Donatello 2022: our forecasts and everything you need to know

Despite the progress of the last few months and the willingness, on the part of the organizers of the David di Donatello, to resume their race celebrating the Italian genius in the world, it is undeniable that the hall has not been doing so well lately. According to Cinetel data, in the last weekend of April the receipts fell by 48% compared to the previous one: while in the rest of Europe the public is slowly returning to populate the cinemas, in Italy this is not the case. Our country, in fact, is at -7% of receipts in 2021 compared to 2022, while in France, Great Britain, Germany and Spain the sign is all positive. It is for this reason – as the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella also pointed out – that it is necessary to ensure that the spectators rediscover the pleasure of returning to watching films in the hall without the distraction of the ringing telephone, and this is why the David di Donatello on stage Wednesday 3 May in prime time on Rai1 they strive to find a formula capable of captivating an audience that is increasingly enslaved by platforms and further and further away from the theater.

It was the hand of God by Paolo Sorrentino

Gianni Fiorito

The ceremony, which sees the management of Carlo Conti and Drusilla Foer, restarts from the many films that have seen the light in the last year but which, unfortunately, many viewers have not watched. To make everyone agree, however, it should be It was the hand of God, the wonderful film by Paolo Sorrentino which, also thanks to the complicity of Netflix which produced and distributed it, is certainly the title that all (or almost) viewers are familiar with. It is also for this reason that, with all probability, the film, which this year came close to the Oscar for best international film, could take home the most important prizes, from best film to best director. We are ready to bet that Freaks Out by Gabriele Mainetti, one of the films that we have waited the longest to see in theaters, will triumph in the technical categories, while the attention now seems almost entirely concentrated on the performances of the actors.

Will Toni Servillo do the dubbed with his masterful interpretation in Here I laugh by Mario Martone and with that of Fabietto’s father in It was the hand of God? And it will succeed Miriam Leoneabsolute protagonist of Diabolik of the Manetti Bros., to get the better of the other candidates? And while the game for the best supporting actress is wide open between Luisa Ranieri and Teresa Saponangelo, always for Sorrentino, it is probable that the David di Donatello will reserve some surprises even for the most promising categories for the future, such as that for the best rookie director – which sees Francesco Costabile and Gianluca Jodice in pole position respectively for A female And The bad poet – and the best original song – that could end up in the hands of Francesca Michielin for a beautiful film like Marilyn has black eyes for which Stefano Accorsi would have deserved the nomination. On the other hand, it is certain that the David Speciale will be awarded to two champions of Italian cinema such as Sabrina Ferilli, who could not fail to notice that the award arrived quite late in her case, and Giovanna Ralli. Cinema is not going to fare very well, but watching the Davids could be an incentive to recover many of the films we missed in the hall, with the hope that the public will rediscover the sparkle that has made our art recognizable all over the globe.
