David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, dies at 65

The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, died in the early hours of Tuesday (11) at the age of 65, in Italy, said his spokesman, Roberto Cuillo.

“@EP_President David Sassoli passed away at 1:15 am on January 11th at the CRO (Oncology Reference Center) in Aviano, Italy, where he was hospitalized. The date and location of the funeral will be communicated in the coming hours,” he wrote on social media.

On Monday (10), Cuillo said that Sassoli had been hospitalized in Italy since December 26 because of a serious complication due to a dysfunction of his immune system.

Sassoli, an Italian center-left politician, was also admitted to a French hospital for pneumonia in September, Reuters reported. He was elected Speaker of Parliament in 2019, and his term would end this month and he was not expected to seek re-election.

Due to illness, Sassoli has not been able to be in Strasbourg, where Parliament is, in recent weeks and missed the European Commission’s annual event in September.
