In New Democracy MEP Manolis Kefalogiannis protest letter, for the internet event co-organized by the French MEP of the Greens Francois Alfonsi with the so-called “Federation of Turks of Western Thrace” answers the President of the European Parliament.
THE David Sassoli stated explicitly and unequivocally that the basic principles of the EU, as well as the resolutions and decisions of the European Parliament, must be fully respected. He added that the International Treaties should be equally respected by everyone, including Turkey.
On the part of Manolis Kefalogiannis, they point out, as broadcast by the Athens News Agency, that the specific event aimed to challenge once again from the Turkish side an International Treaty, the Treaty of Lausanne.
In his reply, the President of the European Parliament states that this event was by no means a formal meeting of Parliament, but an initiative of that member and he was not aware of it, as no prior approval is required from any of Parliament’s official bodies.

He goes on to say that, on the one hand, Members of Parliament represent a wide range of political views which do not necessarily reflect the official position of the European Parliament and, on the other hand, that no Member of Parliament can deny his participation in any public debate.
The New Democracy MEP states that Mr. Sassoli made a clear statement condemning Turkey’s attempt to challenge an international treaty, the Treaty of Lausanne, which clearly states that the minority in Thrace is Muslim, while the minority in Istanbul is a Greek, national minority.
