A daycare center affiliated with Rio de Janeiro City Hall, in Magalhães Bastos, in the west zone of the city, was reported to the police authorities after family members noticed bite marks and scratches on children this past week.
A CNN Nathalya Vieira, mother of a girl aged 1 year and 8 months — who was on the second day of adaptation at Creche Esperança — said she went to pick up her daughter around 11:30 in the morning, when one of the employees informed her that she had been bitten in the back area that day.
After leaving the daycare center and showing her daughter's situation to her husband, Nathalya noticed more than one mark of bites and scratches and decided to return to the unit to complain about what had happened.
“If it was a bite I wouldn't say anything, I understand that children bite, but my daughter was all bitten, all scratched, she had about six bites. Purple. But the only thing we received from the daycare was an apology,” said Nathalya.
The attack caused outrage among the child's godmother, who also decided to go to the daycare center to complain about her goddaughter's situation. The pedagogue present at the unit even explained to the family that on the day the girl was bitten, 17 children were in the room, under the care of just one teacher and a daycare assistant, since the other professional assistant was absent.
“In other words, there was only one assistant, apart from the teacher. For my daughter to be bitten like that, she was left alone or out of sight of the teacher and assistant for a long time. I imagine the chaos it was for this teacher and this assistant, due to the number of children, for you to bathe, feed, care for 17 children, there is no way they could handle it”, said the child's mother.
That same day, Nathalya, who was outside the unit, asked the employees to come in and see the daycare infrastructure. She states that she had not done this before due to internal procedures that restricted access to the internal area of the unit.
“When I entered, when I went to see the daycare center, get to know it, I saw that the situation at the daycare center is extremely precarious. The top part is still without light, understand? It’s very hot, very hot”, said Nathalya.
After receiving reports of other cases that had already happened to other students at the daycare, the child's mother took her daughter to the hospital, where they examined her. She even contacted the Guardianship Council and was taken to the Children's Police Station. The child underwent a forensic examination and the family filed a police report against the school unit.
“The feeling that remains is one of impotence, you know? A disappointment, because I resisted putting her in daycare, I didn't even want to for fear of that happening and on the second day of adaptation… I still went to pick her up early for the adaptation period, if I had stayed full time, what could have happened with her?” asked the mother.
If it is not isolated
Through social media, Raphaella Souza, sister of a 10-month-old boy who is also a student at one of the Creche Esperança units, in Irajá, in the north of Rio, said that the child returned from the place with several bite marks. The girl claims that the child had marks all over her body and that the daycare center did not give any explanation as to what could have happened.
“My brother was bitten for three days, with no explanation as to how it happened. One teacher and one assistant for 24 children. This is unacceptable and is not an isolated case. It’s a lot of negligence, no child should have to go through this,” she published.
According to the Civil Police, the investigation into the case of Raphaella's brother is ongoing at the 27th DP (Vicente de Carvalho). The agency stated that those involved will give statements and the team is looking for images from security cameras at the location in order to clarify what happened.
Regarding the case of Nathalya's daughter, CNN He questioned the police but has not yet heard back.
In a note, the Municipal Department of Education informed that it opened an investigation and began the procedures to investigate the daycare center affiliated with the City Hall. Furthermore, the Secretariat states that those responsible for the students and the legal representatives of the unit have already been heard.
