Dead in shipwreck are identified in Rio de Janeiro

The three bodies of the men who had drowned after a ship sank at dawn on Monday (1st) were identified in the sea of ​​Rio das Ostras, on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The victims are: Fabiano Maurillo Medeiros, 40 years old, Emerson João Prestes, 42 years old, and Roberto Conceição, 67 years old.

The identification was confirmed by the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of Macaé, a neighboring municipality, where the bodies remain awaiting recognition and release from family members.

There is still no information about the times and locations of the wakes and burials of the victims’ bodies, who were from different Brazilian states, including Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo.

In all, 13 crew were on the Cabral I vessel when it sank at dawn this Monday. Fire Brigade teams were called to the scene, around 7 am, and managed to rescue 10 people alive. Three of the crew ended up not resisting and drowned.

The survivors were taken to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Rio das Ostras.

The municipality of the municipality reported that eight have already been discharged and two, one of them, a 75-year-old, remain hospitalized, under observation, with a stable health condition.

The Fire Department teams ended the search in the early afternoon of this Monday, after the rescue of all the vessel’s crew.

Investigations

The 128th Police Station (Rio das Ostras), responsible for the investigations, said it will hear the survivors to clarify the circumstances of the deaths.

The Brazilian Navy, on the other hand, said, through a note, that it had initiated an administrative inquiry to investigate the causes, circumstances and responsibilities of the accident.

“After the investigation is completed and the legal formalities are completed, it will be forwarded to the Maritime Court, which will make the proper distribution and assessment and
it will see the Special Navy Attorney’s Office, so that it adopts the measures provided for in Article 42 of Law No. 2,180/54”, says an excerpt from the Navy’s note, which also lamented the accident and offered solidarity to the victims’ relatives.
