The Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA) said in a statement on Thursday that it has been investigating ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, also known as “Hajji Abdullah”, since 2015 and has evidence of that he was heavily involved in the slave trade of women from Iraq’s religious minority group, the Yazidi.
He was killed Wednesday in a US counterterrorism strike in northwest Syria, President Joe Biden announced Thursday morning.
The non-governmental organization says its investigations in Syria and Iraq have shown its potential criminal responsibility for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and other crimes such as human trafficking.
CIJA reports that Abdullah served as a senior ISIS judge and Sharia law officer in Iraq from 2014, exercising religious authority over all ISIS activities in that country. According to Nerma Jelacic, deputy director of CIJA, “Hajji Abdullah had enormous power to prosecute and punish IS enemies since 2014. He was not just one of the main architects of the Islamic State’s slave trade in Yazidi women and children. , but also personally enslaved and raped female captives.”
The CIJA said that Hajji Abdullah was responsible for all Yazidi prisoners held in Iraq after they were captured during ISIS’s military operation Sinjar in August 2014. He oversaw the distribution of Yazidi women, along with young children, to ISIS members. as sabaya (female spoils of war).
CIJA says he was also responsible for the forced conversions of those deemed unfaithful to Islam and the massacre of hundreds of Yazidi men and boys.
