Dead PKK leader killed in Turkish operation in Iraq

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that a senior Kurdish rebel officer, a Syrian national, was killed during a Turkish intelligence operation in Iraq.

The Turkish military launched a new ground and air strike in northern Iraq in April against separatist bases of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is considered a terrorist organization by Ankara and its allies in the West.

According to the Turkish president, the senior Syrian Kurdish officer killed, known as nom de guerre Sophie Nurettin, was the PKK military commander in Syria.

«This terrorist, who committed many bloody acts, was also responsible for many attacks against our military.“, Said Mr. Erdogan.

Turkey accused the PKK in February of executing 13 Turkish citizens, most of them members of the security forces, who had been holding prisoners in northern Iraq for years.

According to the Turkish head of state, Sophie Nurettin was among those ordered to be executed.

Turkey has frequently carried out attacks in mountainous areas of Iraq against PKK rear bases, an organization that has been waging a bloody guerrilla war on Turkish soil since 1984. More than 40,000 people have lost their lives in this armed conflict.

Turkish raids provoke tensions with Iraqi government, but Mr Erdogan has repeatedly said his government intends to “deal” with the PKK in the region if Baghdad “is unable to do so”.
