Deadly fire at hotel-casino in Cambodia: At least 10 dead and 50 injured

At least ten people died late Wednesday night (12/28) from fire which broke out in a hotel and casino in Paoipet (west), on its border Cambodia with Thailand.

The fire, which broke out at around 11:30 p.m. (local time; yesterday Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Greek time) at the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino, resulted in the death of “about ten people” and the injury of “thirty” others. , according to a preliminary account in a police report consulted by AFP.

On the other side of the border, in Thailand, the authorities, as reported by the Athens News Agency, reported at least seven dead, 53 injured and eight missing.

At the hotel and casino many foreigners were there when the fire broke out, local media reported earlier.

The law prohibits citizens of Cambodia – one of the poorest countries in Asia – from gambling with money in casinos.

A popular destination for foreign gamblers, Paoipet has many casinos that attract mainly Thais who want to gamble legally – casinos are banned in Thailand.

Grand Diamond City is located about 200 meters from the border post, on the road connecting Bangkok with Siem Reap, a tourist destination known for its Angkor temples, a short distance away.

In recent months, there have been several fires in nightclubs, mainly attributed to the fact that even basic safety rules were not followed, in Southeast Asian countries.

In August, a fire at a discotheque near Pattaya, Thailand, killed 26 people, mostly young people who had gone to celebrate.

In September, 32 people died when a fire broke out at a karaoke bar in a suburb of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
