Deal with Russia not worth ‘a broken penny’, says Ukrainian negotiator

Mykhailo Podolyak, a Ukrainian presidential adviser and peace deal negotiator, said on Saturday that any deal with Russia could not be trusted and that Moscow could only be stopped in its invasion by force.

“Any deal with Russia is not worth a broken penny,” Podolyak wrote on the messaging app Telegram.

“Is it possible to negotiate with a country that always lies in a cynical and propagandistic way?”, he added.

Russia and Ukraine blamed each other after peace talks stalled, with the last known face-to-face talks on March 29.

Earlier this month, the Kremlin said Ukraine was showing its unwillingness to continue negotiations, while Kiev officials blame Russia for the lack of progress.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said President Vladimir Putin was the only Russian official he was willing to meet to discuss how to end the war.

Putin says Russian forces are on a special operation to demilitarize Ukraine and rid it of radical anti-Russian nationalists.

Ukraine and its allies call this a false pretext to invade Ukraine on February 24.

“Russia has proven that it is a barbaric country that threatens world security,” Podolyak said. “A barbarian can only be stopped by force.”
