A man sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl in 2007 was executed on Tuesday in Missouri, the state’s corrections service announced in the evening. This is the 23rd execution that took place this year in the country. Almost all of them used lethal chemical injections, except for three that were done by the highly controversial method of nitrogen inhalation in Alabama (southeast) and a fourth in Missouri. Christopher Collings, 49, was sentenced to death in 2012 for the rape and murder of Rowan Ford, 9, his friend’s stepdaughter. He confessed to kidnapping her, raping her and then strangling her when he realized she recognized him, according to the indictment.
