Death toll after earthquake in Turkey and Syria exceeds 6,000

At least 6,326 people died in Turkey and Syria after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the region on Monday (6).

The death toll rose to 4,544 in Turkey as of Tuesday afternoon, where 10 provinces were affected, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD).

The death toll in Syria is over 1,782: More than 970 people were killed in opposition-controlled areas, according to the Syrian White Helmets, also known as the Syrian Civil Defense.

In government-controlled areas, the death toll stands at 812, according to state news agency SANA.

At least 30,474 people were injured in both countries, according to data from the Turkish government, the White Helmets and Syrian state media.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that about 23 million people could be affected by the strong earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey on Monday (6), leaving more than 5,000 dead and thousands injured.

“The overall event maps show that potentially 23 million people are exposed, including around 5 million vulnerable populations, with more than 350,000 elderly people and 1.4 million children,” said WHO Senior Emergencies Officer Adelheid Marschang. , to the meeting of the executive board of the United Nations (UN) health agency in Geneva.

The WHO chief expressed his concern over the situation, calling it a “race against time”.

“We are especially concerned about the areas where we still don’t have information,” said Tedros Adhanom, WHO director-general. “Damage mapping is a way to understand where we need to focus our attention.”

Footage of rescue efforts in both countries emerged on Monday, with family members mourning the loss of loved ones, while others celebrated survivors meeting in the rubble of destroyed buildings.
