The death toll from Cyclone Batsirai in Madagascar jumped to 120 on Friday. Earlier this week, the state disaster relief agency had reported 92 deaths.
The cyclone hit the Indian Ocean island last Saturday night, hitting the southeast coast before retreating Sunday night.
The aid agency said of the deaths, 87 occurred in the Ikongo district area of southeastern Madagascar. The most in-depth data on the impacts of the tragedy in the region are still being studied.
According to authorities, the cyclone left just over 124,000 people with their homes damaged or destroyed, and about 30,000 homeless, who were allocated to camps spread across 108 locations.
Batsirai was Madagascar’s second destructive storm in two weeks, after Tropical Storm Ana killed 55 and displaced 130,000 in a different area of the country further north.
The island nation, with a population of nearly 30 million, was already suffering from food shortages in the south as a result of a severe and prolonged drought.
