Death toll from Israeli strikes in Lebanon rises to 492, officials say

The death toll from Israeli strikes in Lebanon has risen to 492, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

The dead included 35 children and 58 women, the ministry said in a statement on Monday (23) about the ongoing attacks in southern Lebanon, Beqaa and Baalbek.

The ministry said at least 1,645 people were injured.

Some of the casualties following Israeli strikes in Lebanon on Monday were likely caused by secondary explosions, an Israeli military spokesman said.

At a news conference on Monday, Daniel Hagari said there were “many secondary explosions” that occurred when buildings “containing deadly munitions, rockets and missiles” were hit.

“It is likely that some of the victims are from these secondary explosions,” he said.

“Let me be clear: Hezbollah is responsible for this situation,” Hagari added.

The spokesman said Hezbollah was using civilian homes to store its weapons and showed photos he said showed long-range rockets stored inside a house in Lebanon. CNN cannot verify the authenticity of the photos.

“Among the dead, there were a large number of Hezbollah terrorists who were close to the weapons we targeted,” Hagari said, adding that there was a “high number of casualties.”

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid praised the operation in a post on X, saying: “Eliminations, a thousand targets in one day, hitting strategic assets. This is how you restore Israeli deterrence!”
