Death toll rises in Pakistan: 43 killed in two train collisions

The “black list” of the tragic accident in the southern province of Sindh continues to grow Pakistan, when two trains collided violently. At least 43 people lost their lives and dozens more were injured.

Rescuers took hours to pull some trapped passengers out of the wreckage.

The accident occurred around 3:30 in the morning, local time, near the city of Daharki, in the north of Sindh province, according to a Pakistan Railways spokesman. At that time, most of the 1,200 passengers on both trains were asleep.

One train derailed and then collided with another, coming from the opposite direction.

“We fell on each other, but we did not suffer anything serious”, The train derailed, Akhtar Rajput, a passenger on the Millat Express, told AFP. “Then another train came out of nowhere and hit us. “When I got together, I saw passengers lying on the floor next to me, others were trying to get out of the wagon.” he continued.

The Millat Express was en route from Karachi to the city of Sardoga when it derailed and fell on the lines. At that time it was coming from the opposite direction, the Sir Syed Exress, which had started from Rawalpindi.

According to Information Minister Fawad Chondri, the two accidents occurred within minutes.

“I was disoriented, trying to figure out what happened to us when the other train hit us.” said another passenger, Sahid, according to what APE-MPE conveys.

A local police official, Umar Tufayl, said at least 43 people had been killed, fearing the final toll would be heavier.

A Pakistani Railways spokesman earlier said “at least 33 people were killed”.

Pakistan: Great difficulty in organizing rescue operation

In the footage broadcast by local TV channels, doctors are seen placing serum on a man, who is conscious but only his torso is visible, protruding through a mass of ironwork.

The corpses were placed on the train seats and covered with traditional shawls.

“The area is isolated and we are having difficulty organizing the rescue operation.” explained the representative of the Pakistani Railways.

The head of the National Disaster Management Authority, General Akhtar Nawaz Sati, announced that the army and a paramilitary force stationed nearby were rushing to the rescue. Many villagers also went to the scene of the accident to help the injured.

According to Interior Minister and former Minister of Railways Sheikh Rashid, the railway lines where the accident took place date back to 1880. The current Minister of Railways Azam Swati stressed that this part of the lines was “really dangerous”, but the authorities the major infrastructure project “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” to begin its repair.

“If there are delays (in disbursement) we will rebuild this line with our own money,” he promised.

Rail accidents are common in Pakistan, which inherited thousands of kilometers of colonial-era trains and trains, but their maintenance has been neglected.
