Death toll rises to 7 after fire at nursing home in SP

The death toll rose to seven after a fire in a nursing home in São Paulo on the 10th, according to information from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP). According to the SSP, one of the victims was hospitalized and died on Sunday (25).

Among the fatal victims are six elderly people and a caregiver. In addition to these, a woman was rescued alive on the day of the fire.

At the time, the captain who attended the case reported that the place did not have a permit to function as a nursing home. In a statement, the SSP says that the team of the 49th Police District, in São Mateus, carries out hearings of the victims’ families, employees and former employees.

“Expert reports are being prepared and, as soon as they are finalized, they will be sent for analysis by the police authority. The investigations continue with a view to clarifying the facts,” the statement reads.

After the fire, the nursing home was closed by the City of São Paulo “due to the risk that exists in the continued use of the property in its current conditions, posing a serious threat to the physical integrity of its occupants, neighbors or passers-by”.
