The presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, scheduled for this Tuesday (10), could have a significant impact on the American elections, according to ESPM International Relations professor Leonardo Trevisan. In an interview with CNN Brazil the expert highlighted that the event has the potential to influence around 20% of the electorate, considered “independents”.
According to Trevisan, 80% of the votes in the United States have already been decided, with most states maintaining their traditional partisan leanings. However, it is the segment of undecided voters that could determine the final outcome of the election.
Voter expectations
The professor highlighted that a recent survey by the New York Times in partnership with Siena College revealed that 61% of Americans expect major changes after the elections, an unprecedented rate. “What brings this rate? Anguish, a lot of difficult situations, exactly post-pandemic, high prices,” explained Trevisan.
In this context, Kamala Harris may have a strategic advantage in the debate. According to the expert, while Trump tends to maintain his usual speech, Harris has the opportunity to present new proposals and address economic issues that concern the electorate, such as price controls.
Impact on social networks
Trevisan also commented on the importance of social media in disseminating excerpts from the debate. “Kamala has the upper hand to use the debate on social media and to nurture and engage with the 20% of voters who have not yet decided on their vote,” he said.
The professor concluded by emphasizing that these undecided voters “will be the ones who will decide the election, without a doubt”, highlighting the relevance of the debate in shaping public opinion and directing the vote of Americans who are still undecided.
