After “forty waves”, disagreements, negotiations, withdrawals and objections, the basic structure of the debate of the candidates for the leadership of the Movement for Change was finally finalized.
The debate of the first round will be held on November 29 at 22:00 and will be attended by five of the six candidates: Nikos Androulakis, Andreas Loverdos, Pavlos Christidis, Pavlos Geroulanos, Haris Kastanidis.
Former Prime Minister George Papandreou will not participate, who had submitted his own proposal and insisted on it.
This afternoon, the representatives of the three candidates will meet again, in order to conclude the procedure that will be followed.
According to information, there are six thematic sections on the table (eg foreign policy, economy, pandemic, climate, institutions, internal parties), while in the last section one candidate will ask questions to the other.
Christidis’ proposal that the candidates be standing for two hours does not seem to proceed for practical reasons and -mainly- fatigue.
Solution to the new engagement
It is recalled that two days ago there was a new involvement for the journalists who will participate. The ERT side proposed as a coordinator the public television presenter Andrianna Paraskevopoulou and as journalists who will ask their questions Pavlos Tsima (SKAI), Tassos Pappas (Journal of the Editors) and George Kouvaras (Action 24).
The four candidates (Loverdos, Christidis, Geroulanos, Kastanidis) agreed, but the Androulaki side expressed its disagreement, asking for six journalists from the respective pan-Hellenic channels to participate instead of the three proposed by ERT.
This proposal for a total of 7 journalists with 5 candidates has created momentum. According to information, ERT started some informal contacts with the private channels, which had not concluded whether they want to send first-class names or not to the debate.
Eventually, public television decided to disassociate itself from the role of mediator and suggested to the five candidates that they take over the negotiations with the channels, which was not possible.
Androulakis did it back
The result was that the Androulaki side on Thursday night retreated and agreed with ERT’s original proposal.
As circles of the MEP explain, “for reasons of greater visibility, pluralism but also consistency with the successful process of 2017, we proposed the participation of all national channels, as the representatives of the candidates agreed during their first meeting with ERTH. For reasons that she considered, she proposed another procedure for the journalistic composition of the debate. Our priority is to conduct the debate. So, it goes without saying that we will be present again and we will present our positions for the next day of the party and the country “.
Speaking to Mega on Friday morning, the MEP himself said he was visibly annoyed that “I agreed to change the terms of the debate so that it could take place. Because I am anxious to be heard, I agreed to change the terms, which in my opinion changed badly”.
The reasoning of ERT
It is noted that ERT’s reasoning is based on the fact that the three journalists are well-known political editors of recognized prestige. They have dealt with the wider area of the Center-Left, each have their own character and point of view (with deviations to the right and left) and represent all types of media, ie newspaper, radio and television (Journal of the Editors, SKAI, Action 24).
In this way, ERT executives estimate, they are an appropriate and pluralistic trio in conducting a serious and interesting discussion about the leadership of the third largest party in the country.
For his part, George Papandreou, answering yesterday to Alpha why he is not participating in the debate, said that with the conditions that are being conducted it would not be right and “he would not want to hurt the party”. “I want a substantial debate, not a debate of impressions. A unifying dialogue that will help and not that will deconstruct the party. I am responsible for the unifying course, for the next day,” he noted.
His colleague, MEP Eva Kailis, who has sided with Andreas Loverdos, left tips that Nikos Androulakis did not really want the debate. “May the debate take place and everyone participate. Why, not only Mr. Papandreou, but also Mr. Androulakis now expresses objections regarding the choice of journalists. Let us leave pretexts and proposals and where there is a possibility of dialogue we seek it “There should be clear positions,” Ms. Kailis told SKAI yesterday before the issue was finalized.
