Deborah James, cancer activist who raised millions of pounds, dies

The presenter, influencer and activist Deborah James died at the age of 40 this Tuesday (28), according to the family announced through social networks. She was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016, and has been receiving palliative care at home since May of this year.

According to the publication, she died at her home, surrounded by her family.

“We are incredibly proud of their work and commitment to charitable campaigns, fundraising and endless efforts to create awareness of the cancer that has touched so many lives,” they wrote on Instagram.

“We are grateful for giving us a private time as a family, and we look forward to continuing Deborah’s legacy long into the future.”

The ad quoted a final message left by Deborah, shared with her permission, according to relatives: “Find a life worth enjoying: take risks, love deeply, have no regrets, and always have rebellious hope.”

After his diagnosis, James started a blog, where he shared his experience with cancer treatment and his emotional journey. Publications gained prominence, she went on to write a column for the British newspaper The Sun. With the success of the writings, she left for the world of podcasts, where she started to present the program “You, Me and The Big C”, on the BBC network.

In the episodes, she talked to other people undergoing cancer treatment, and gave advice to those facing the disease.

The activist started the fundraiser “Bowelbabe Fund”, which was named after her Instagram page. Currently, the campaign has raised more than £6 million (approximately 37 million reais), used to research personalized treatments against cancer.

On May 9, she shared in her networks that she had stopped active treatment for bowel cancer, and would start receiving palliative care at her home. “That’s the message I never wanted to write. We’ve tried everything, but my body just isn’t reacting. My active treatment has stopped and I am receiving end-of-life care at home, surrounded by my amazing family and focused on being pain free and spending time with them,” she wrote.

Deborah received the title of lady of British royalty on May 13, during a visit by Prince William at his home. She shared that the heir to the throne seemed “genuinely interested” in investments in advancing oncology. The distribution of this type of honor is announced by the Crown at the beginning of each year, but may be awarded at other times in special cases.
