Sept days stuck in the snow, in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, in California (United States). This is what Harland Earls, 29, experienced, CNN reports. While on his way to a birthday Sunday, Jan. 24, the route he was scheduled to take, Interstate 80, was closed due to a snowstorm. He then started his GPS to find another way. Harland Earls chose the shorter route, taking it over a mountain pass. Except that the latter was snow-covered and not cleared. The man thus finds himself blocked, unable to turn around. Impossible, either, to pick up a telephone signal. Especially since his phone takes water during an operation to free his van. It will take three days for the phone to dry out and restart.
A stove and beans
In the meantime, Harland Earls must survive. Fortunately, he has two cans of beans, sausage and old pieces of bread in his vehicle. He also has winter clothes and a small stove. His family, worried about not having any news, reports his disappearance and searches are launched.
Seasoned, it’s a chance, with survival techniques, Harland Earls chops wood, makes fire, and with his stove melts snow to hydrate. After seven days, “he was really desperate and running out of supplies,” said his mother, Julie Earls. Phone charged at 50%, he goes to find a high point to pick up a network and finally makes a call to 911, the emergency number in the United States and Canada. Localized by the emergency services thanks to the GPS of his phone, Harland Earls was evacuated by helicopter. Julie Earls confirmed that he was in good health despite the fatigue, cold and hunger.
