Decision in import substitution: the Ministry of Industry and Trade predicts an increase in the shortage of chips for cars

The semiconductor industry is going through hard times right now. One of the first to feel the shortage of chips was the automakers and, according to industry experts, the crisis will continue to have a negative impact on the automotive industry next year. Vasily Shpak, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, shares this opinion.

According to Shpak, problems with the supply of electronic components will only get worse, the gap in supply chains will grow, and the pace of production will slow down. The only way out for automakers, which during 2021 had to repeatedly stop their factories due to a shortage of chips, may be import substitution, that is, a switch to domestically produced products. The deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade is confident that the issue of switching to Russian components of domestic assemblers is not just a matter of state policy, but a matter of survival and further development of their own business.

Andrey Zarenin, Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation, shares a similar opinion. According to him, the country has all the necessary technologies for the production of electronic components for cars. But the problem may lie in the fact that foreign companies supply whole systems at once, and not individual components.
