Decision on third-party payment systems in the App Store will be reconsidered

Most recently, on September 10, 2021, District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled against Apple and Epic Games, which stated that Apple cannot prevent application developers from posting links to third-party payment systems in their software. – Previously, such mechanics in the App Store were strictly prohibited. The IT giant was supposed to make the appropriate changes to its rules by December 9, but at the last minute the company management nevertheless achieved a reconsideration of the decision on the case, which will now be studied and considered anew.

The information publication Engadget, citing its sources, reports that the appellate court sided with Apple, announcing that the California District Court’s verdict is currently invalidated. Judge Gonzalez Rogers’ ruling will only go into effect if, following a new trial between Apple and Epic Games, new details do not force the appellate judges to issue a different verdict. And, judging by the information of the publication, it will take at least several months to consider this case – the situation with payment systems will be studied quite scrupulously.

Themselves representatives of Apple in the complaint, which became the basis for the revision of the verdict, said that the ability to post links to third-party payment systems will upset the balance between software developers and users of the App Store. In addition, the company believes that alternative payment methods will cause irreparable damage to both Apple and its users in the future. Taking into account these statements, the appellate court said that the decision of the district court raises many questions, which means that the situation needs to be reconsidered.
