Decline in privatization worries the productive sector, says president of Fiemg

The president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) ordered the new ministers to take measures to revoke the acts that followed the privatization of eight state-owned companies.

In an interview with CNN This Saturday (7), the president of the Federation of Industries of Minas Gerais (Fiemg), Flávio Roscoe, commented on perspectives on the scenario.

“Privatization is a very relevant agenda for the country and for the productive sector. It is with great concern the setback in this area. Bearing in mind that most of our state-owned companies are in key segments, such as Petrobras, which determines the future of the entire Brazilian petrochemical sector, as it is at the base of the chain of the entire sector – that is, the entire petrochemical sector Brazilian depends on Petrobras,” he said.

Roscoe said that state-owned companies “add a greater essence”.

“The state-owned company is obliged to comply with all legal parameters, to have much greater rigidity in its decisions. It is less quick in reaction, in changes of direction, so this brings an essence that is inherent to the fact of being state-owned. Because you have to follow a series of legal obligations that are very restrictive, and they should be, because otherwise we have corruption at the other end. But that makes companies less efficient,” she said.

The president of Fiemg stated that, with the exception of segments such as health or education, which have more effective participation by the State, “the desirable thing is that we privatize all these segments so that there is a greater dynamic of growth in the economy, greater competitiveness and productivity. We see it with great concern. We understand that privatizations are very welcome”, he highlighted.

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) should resume, in 2023, the judgment on the prohibition of unfair dismissal when the employer dismisses the employee for no apparent reason.

“This is a very relevant judgment. We understand that ratification, that is, if Brazil ratifies it, is considered a null decree, this convention (…) we are going to have a disaster in the area of jobs in Brazil”, said Roscoe.

“In these 36 countries that ratified the convention, productivity over the last few decades has fallen by 0.06% in these countries, while in the rest of the world that did not ratify, the productivity of their economies grew by an average of 1.7% per year”, he added.

The president of Fiemg stated that the ban on unfair dismissal can lead to loss of productivity.

“When you make it difficult to fire people, what you actually do is close the job door. When you have great difficulty in being fired, you have a loss of productivity. You don’t have an instrument for changing people as they become inadequate”, he says.
