DEDA: Production, distribution and use of ‘green’ biomethane begins, for the first time in Greece

One step before the implementation of the first pilot projects for biomethane distribution in Greece is DEDA, which today submitted an application to the Energy Regulatory Authority (RAE) in order to be granted permission to receive and distribute biomethane in low and medium pressure networks it manages.

The application concerns the temporary licensing of DEDA, until the overall institutional / regulatory framework for the development of the biomethane market as a distributable renewable gas fuel in our country is institutionalized. Biomethane will be produced from agricultural and livestock residues, as well as the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. Therefore, its production will have a significant contribution to the development and consolidation of the circular economy in our country.

The first pilot projects of biomethane distribution of DEDA are planned to be implemented in the prefectures of Serres and Imathia within 2022 and concern the holistic approach of the company to the development of the biomethane market in Greece: from production, injection, distribution, sale and use .

In this context, DEDA has already reached an agreement with two existing biogas plants, which will participate in the pilot projects, for their upgrade to biomethane production units, which will then be injected into the neighboring DEDA low and medium networks. and will be distributed as a mixture with natural gas to domestic, commercial and industrial consumers.

It is noted that DEDA, before proceeding with the submission of the application for a biomethane distribution license, had already prepared studies in order to map the potential of available raw materials for biomethane production in all areas in which it operates. It has also prepared specific proposals, which it will submit to the competent bodies within the next few days, for the necessary legislative and regulatory additions to the existing distribution framework in order to develop the biomethane market.

It is pointed out that the injection of biomethane in the gas distribution networks is intended for the same uses as natural gas, ie it concerns households, businesses and industry, while supporting those responsible for carbon taxation.

The CEO of DEDA, Marios Tsakas stated in this regard: “We are very happy to start the implementation of a very important project for the energy events of our country. DEDA is the first Gas Distribution Manager in Greece that proceeds through the distribution, networks of renewable gaseous fuels with minimal to zero carbon footprint, such as biomethane. conclusions for all the activities related to the development of the biomethane market in our country, as well as for the best practices that should be applied. With this important initiative, DEDA ensures the compatibility of the infrastructure it manages with the new energy guidelines axes, contributes to the development of the circular economy and maximizes the benefit of consumers lotus. I would like to warmly thank the Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, as well as the Secretary General of Energy and Mineral Raw Materials, Ms. Alexandra Sdoukou, for their full support in the implementation of this innovative project of DEDA “.
