Deep Nostalgia: how the site that animates the old photos works

There are those who use it to pass the time “giving life “to historical figures, and many others who instead take advantage of it for experience the thrill of seeing grandparents, great-grandparents, friends who passed away in a very realistic way: basically it was born above all for this Deep Nostalgia, a new service that is attracting the attention of millions of users around the world, just launched by the company specialized in genealogical research MyHeritage, together with the startup D-ID.

Use artificial intelligence to animate faces protagonists of an image – with, for example, a look, a smile or a blink of an eye – with a mechanism very similar to deepake (the technique, always based on artificial intelligence, which allows you to put the face of any person instead of another in a video).

To try just click on www.myheritage.it/deep-nostalgia, register in a few clicks and then upload the image: in maximum 20 seconds Deep Nostalgia animates any face with the gestures that are most suitable among those of hundreds of “pilot videos” made with the facial movements of the employees of the company. At this point, the gif can also be shared on social networks. There are 5 free attempts available, and then the site requires you to sign up for a subscription.

The results are very impressive, and some say even disturbing if the site is used to animate old photos of deceased loved ones. The creators themselves recognize it: «Some people – they write in the faq – love the Deep Nostalgia functionality and consider it magical, while others find it disturbing and do not appreciate it. THEn indeed, the results can be questionable and it is difficult to remain indifferent to this technology».
