O Deep Purple hasn’t left its fans without news for a long time: just over a year after releasing the album “Whoosh!” (2020) – which reached fourth place in the US music charts and first in some European countries -, British musicians present this Friday (26) “Turning to Crime”, a collection of covers by artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Bob Dylan, Cream, Ray Charles e Quincy Jones.
With 12 tracks, Deep Purple’s 21st album will be released by earMusic and is produced by Bob Ezrin – who produced the band’s last three albums and has a history of work with Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and Kiss. Last month, Deep Purple advanced the release of two singles on streaming platforms: the songs “7 and 7 Is” by the band Love, and “Oh Well” by Fleetwood Mac.
The album, first working entirely with covers from other bands, was recorded by the British group during the period of social isolation in 2020. Among the tracks on “Turning to Crime” are versions of “Watching the River Flow”, originally released in 1971 by Bob Dylan, and the classic “White Room”, which is part of Cream’s “Wheels of Fire” (1968) album.
The final track on the album, dubbed “Caught in the Act,” is a Medley of covers of five songs, including “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin and “Gimme Some Lovin” by Spencer Davis Group. Check the complete tracklist at the end of the article.
Since September, music critics and fans of the band have raised suspicions about a new release by Deep Purple. Earlier that month, a countdown with the title “Turning to Crime” was started on the label’s official website. The count ended in early October, when the band made the official announcement about the record.
A few days before the revelation, however, some information had already been leaked through the website of the French store Fnac, which indicated the pre-sale of an album of covers with the tracklist and cover of the album. Soon after, the ad was taken off the air.
