Defaulter records rise 5.1% in March compared to February, reveals Boa Vista

The number of defaulters in Brazil rose 5.1% in March compared to February, seasonally adjusted, Boa Vista reported this Thursday (7th). In the interannual comparison, however, there was a fall of 4.5%.

With the March result, the indicator closed the first quarter with a rise of 9.2% compared to the same period of the previous year and 6.7% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

In the 12-month period, the number of defaulters dropped slightly from 4.7% to 4.6%.

“This slowdown, however, tends to be one-off, like the monthly drop in January of 0.7%. The long-term curve should resume the pace of acceleration in the coming months”, explains Boa Vista in a note.

“The combination of inflation and high interest rates, the expectation that this situation will last longer and the low growth projections, which may inhibit the continued recovery of the labor market, weighs on the ability of consumers to keep their accounts up to date.”

The Credit Recovery indicator, in turn, increased 6.4% compared to February and 11.3% compared to March 2021.

The index registered an increase of 13.6% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, but the accumulated variation in 12 months cooled from 5.1% to 4.3% this month.

“It is worth mentioning that, as in the first two months of the year, part of this recovery is also due to the increase in the flow of defaulters, which has been strong. However, getting rid of credit restrictions does not eliminate credit risk, so much so that the projection is for an increase in the default rate throughout this year”, adds Boa Vista.
