Defense establishes guidelines for the use of the Armed Forces in elections

In a document published this Wednesday (14), in the Official Gazette, the Ministry of Defense establishes guidelines for the use of the Armed Forces in this year’s elections. According to the plan, the Navy, Army and Air Force will operate in regions designated by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), where there is a need for increased security and logistical difficulties during voting and counting of votes.

Recent survey carried out by CNN Brasil before the regional electoral courts, pointed out that at least 453 municipalities had already filed a demand with the TSE.

The Ministry of Defense ordinance establishes that six operational commands, located in Manaus, Belém, Recife, Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília are responsible for the action. “Other joint commands can be activated by order or the areas of responsibility can be changed according to need”, says the text.

The joint commands, according to the publication, will be responsible for coordinating activities with other municipal, state and federal agencies.

Authorizing the use of the Armed Forces to support elections is the prerogative of the President of the Republic. However, the definition of the military’s areas of action and the service to be performed come from the TSE, which gathers the needs of each region of the country and passes it on to the Ministry of Defense. It is a standard procedure in all claims.
