Defense Minister Paulo Sergio Nogueira sent a new official letter to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) reiterating the request for a private hearing between the technical groups of the Armed Forces and the Electoral Justice.
The request had already been made last week, but on Sunday (19), the president of the TSE, Edson Fachin, replied that technical criteria on the electoral process will already be addressed at a meeting of the electoral transparency committee, scheduled for 15:00 this Monday (20), in virtual format.
In the official letter, the active-duty general confirms the presence of the Armed Forces at the meeting this Monday (20), which should be represented by General Heber Portela, but continues to emphasize the importance of a new specific meeting, since the discussion about the process electoral “provokes time and face-to-face interaction”.
“I reiterate the need to hold a specific meeting between the technical teams of the TSE and the Armed Forces, given that the deepening of the discussion on complex technical aspects requires time and face-to-face interaction, which are not contemplated in the aforementioned meeting of the transparency committee. election,” he says.
The Electoral Justice and the Ministry of Defense have exchanged official letters on questions raised by the Armed Forces regarding the Brazilian voting system.
On June 13, Fachin sent a letter to the ministry in which he said he had “high regard” for the Armed Forces and that dialogue is necessary to strengthen democracy.
The proposal for a dialogue comes after the minister complained that the Armed Forces were not receiving prestige by the Electoral Justice. In response, the TSE released a list of recommendations that were accepted for this year’s elections.
In the list, of the 32 propositions fully or partially accepted by the Electoral Justice, 10 were offered by the Armed Forces.
