Defense requests that judge suspected of selling sentences be heard by the PF

The defense of Ivo de Almeida, a judge removed from the Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJ-SP) under suspicion of selling sentences, asked the delegate responsible for the case to set a date for the magistrate’s hearings, this past Thursday (11).

According to the document signed by Ivo’s lawyers, the purpose of the request is to clarify the facts of the investigation.

In addition to the request for the judge’s testimony, Almeida’s defense clarified that it also requested access to the investigation documents, especially the decision that determined the judge’s removal. “To this day, we have not had access,” said Ivo’s lawyer.

Remember the case

Ivo de Almeida was removed from his position as a judge at the TJ-SP for a period of one year, after being targeted by Operation Churrascada last month. The information was confirmed by the press office of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ).

The PF action began on June 20th of this year and aimed to combat corruption in the São Paulo judicial system.

According to the findings of CNN the judge, who works in the 1st Criminal Law Chamber of the Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJ/-SP), is the target of investigations for selling sentences.

The operation was ordered by the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), which ordered the execution of 17 search and seizure warrants at addresses in the capital of São Paulo and in the interior of the state. More than 80 federal police officers participated in the operations.

Operation Barbecue

Initiated as a result of Operation Contagion, which dismantled a criminal organization that diverted public funds from the health sector in the state of São Paulo, in 2021. The operation was named after the term “barbecue”, which was used by those investigated to indicate the day of the judge’s judicial duty.

In a statement, the Court of Justice of São Paulo reported that there was no prior communication about the operation launched by the Federal Police, by order of the STJ. However, in the statement, the president of the TJ-SP states that he will comply with all the determinations issued by the court, and as soon as he has access to the content of the investigation, he will adopt the appropriate administrative measures.
