SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest fell in the 12 months to July 2022, according to official government data released on Wednesday (30).
Forest destruction has dropped in the last 12 months to 11,568 square kilometers, show annual data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).
Inpe releases more frequent data on deforestation through the Deter rapid response system, which can be distorted due to weather conditions.
However, the annual Prodes report, released this Wednesday, provides the final data used as a reference for Brazilian environmental policy and international commitments on climate change.
The official annual measure of deforestation produced by Inpe’s Prodes satellite monitoring program is much more accurate than the Deter rapid alert system, which publishes weekly figures.
