Delegate Ericson de Souza Tavares, head of the 6th Integrated Police District of Manaus, in addition to nine other police officers (four civilians and five military personnel) and two other people had preventive detention ordered by the Amazonas Court on suspicion of extortion.
The arrest of those involved took place on Saturday (23) in the municipality of Manacapuru, in the interior of Amazonas. Like them, the police seized weapons that did not belong to the institutions, as well as vehicles with signs of tampering, vests and ammunition magazines.
This Monday (25), the state's security leadership met at the Integrated Eating and Control Center to provide details of the case. Investigations indicate that the group's dynamics were to approach people involved in crimes and then commit crimes such as extortion through kidnapping and threats.
According to the Civil Police, several complaints were received that led to the arrests of the employees. They, however, were already being investigated by the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco), from the Amazonas Public Ministry, and by the Manacapuru Public Prosecutor's Office, precisely on suspicion of extortion.
Investigations must continue to clarify the extent of the group's activities. In addition to the criminal proceedings in court, administrative measures will be taken by the Internal Affairs Department.
