A Pernambuco Civil Police delegate is suspected of shooting a 26-year-old resident during a party at the Fort of the Remedies in Fernando de Noronha at dawn on Monday (5). The victim was rescued with injuries and taken to São Lucas Hospital in the archipelago.
The policeman was identified as Luiz Alberto Braga. According to the Secretariat of Social Defense of Pernambuco (SDS-PE), the Military Police were called after reports of firearm shots at the scene.
SDS Corregedoria has established a preliminary procedure to investigate the case and said the Department of Homicides and Protection of Persons (DHPP) will follow the investigation.
The Civil Police did not say what would have led the delegate to shoot, but witnesses reported that there would have been confusion because of jealousy.
A video that circulates on social networks shows the moment the delegate is with his cell phone in his hand when the victim approaches. The images show that the policeman pushes the man and then slaps the chest region. The resident reacts, and the two come into a body fight. During the confrontation, the delegate fires a firearm. After the incident, the delegate left the island on the first flight.
On the morning of Monday, the population reacted with indignation. Residents blocked BR-363, the archipelago’s main road, in a protest act to demand justice. Tires were burned, and traffic was interrupted for hours.
The Association of Police Delegates of the State of Pernambuco (Adeppe) defends the delegate’s performance. According to the note, he acted in self -defense by reacting to unfair physical aggression after intervening in a situation of persecution against his mate. Even identified as a police officer and with no intention of confrontation, the delegate was attacked by a man who tried to disarm him, representing a risk to everyone’s safety. In response, he fired a single shot in the aggressor’s leg to neutralize the threat. The delegate had not ingested alcohol and cooperated with the authorities, voluntarily undergoing examinations in the IML.
