A new forecast from research firm Counterpoint Research says that shipments of foldable smartphones this year will triple from last year to around 9 million units.
However, by 2023, the supply of such smartphones may grow 10 times. Counterpoint Research adds that Samsung will dominate with 88% of the foldable smartphone market.
There are currently only a handful of foldable smartphone companies, which is why Samsung remains the market leader. However, Counterpoint Research believes the South Korean giant will continue to dominate the market even after other brands launch their own foldable phones.

Other smartphone makers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Honor, among others, are expected to release their foldable smartphones later this year. Xiaomi has already launched the first foldable phone, however it is only sold in China. Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPhone that could be released in 2023.
A well-known network whistleblower Ice Universe disagrees with the forecast of Counterpoint Research and other analysts, who attribute Samsung a 75% stake. The insider believes that Samsung will not be the leader of the foldable smartphone market for long: “When Chinese brands lower prices and release interesting foldable phones, Samsung’s share will decline significantly.”
