Deliverymen can be remunerated in case of accident, lawyer says about new law

President Jair Bolsonaro sanctioned, on Wednesday (5), the bill that obliges application companies to contract insurance for cases of accidents involving deliverymen, among other benefits.

in interview to CNN, the labor lawyer Miguel Marin Ruiz stated that the PL is “a great victory” for workers, as it also provides for remuneration of professionals if they are unable to perform the service.

“It is a very important law, especially considering that deliverymen are part of the front line at this time of crisis that we are facing,” said the lawyer.

Ruiz explained that the new law provides for coverage of personal injury to the worker, in cases of inability to perform the service or even death.

The financial aid provided is calculated based on the last three months of salary, explained the lawyer.

“Suffered accident? Dropped down? The worker did not have any kind of remuneration in these cases, but now he does”, he said.

Due to the new legislation, companies are obliged to supply delivery people with masks, gel alcohol, drinking water and toilets inside the establishments. For Miguel Marin Ruiz, these obligations are essential to protect workers in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This is a big step forward, even for the conditions. Deliverymen can be major disease vectors [coronavírus]. In this way, companies must also provide a kind of training, guidance on how to proceed with deliveries”, highlighted the lawyer.
