Dell brings disabled CUDA cores back to GeForce RTX 3070 in new Alienware laptop

The story of the stripped-down graphics card in the new Alienware laptop continues. It turns out that this is still not a bug or a software problem, as some initially thought.

Dell could really deliberately disable some of the CUDA cores on the GeForce RTX 3070. However, everything is not so simple here.

Dell’s first comment was that the company did this on purpose after “rigorous testing.” At the same time, the company noted that the missing cores can be activated in the future through a software update.

Later, in a comment, another resource was actually told quite differently.

We’ve learned that Alienware’s vBIOS misconfiguration is limiting the number of CUDA cores in RTX 3070 configurations. This is a bug we are trying to fix as soon as possible. We are speeding up the solution through validation and expect to resolve this issue by mid-June. In the meantime, we do not recommend using vBIOS from another Alienware platform to resolve this issue. We apologize for any disappointment.

That is, the company already claims that this is a BIOS error of the graphics adapter, which they will try to solve in the coming weeks.

Recall that the other day it was discovered that the gaming laptop Alienware m15 R5 has a GeForce RTX 3070 video card not 5120 cores, but 4608. This is not indicated in the specifications on the Dell website, although this particular manufacturer does not indicate any details about the GPU at all, despite the requirements of Nvidia …

The bottom line is that, unlike a number of other characteristics, the number of CUDA cores is clearly indicated on the Nvidia website, and their change by one manufacturer or another, in theory, can be regarded as cheating buyers.
