Delphi Economic Forum: Wars are the denial of European values

Can the mission of the European way of life be achieved in a Europe that is going through such a difficult period, a health / economic crisis and a war? Has the European Union done enough in the past to give weight to European values? With this question, Sneška Quaedvlieg – Mihailović, Secretary General of the pan-European Cultural Heritage Organization, Europa Nostra, opened the fruitful debate “For a European Union based on values” at the 7th Delphi Economic Forum in Delphi. April 6-9 and is under the auspices of SA of the President of the Republic, Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Margaritis Schoinas, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for promoting the European way of life, referred to the moment when the President of the European Commission, Ursula Gertrude von der Leyen, instructed him on the portfolio, insisting on giving weight to man. “He told me to be the people-centered commissioner and to work on policies that will affect the lives of people in Europe. European Union and integration is something that is possible, a testament to a functioning Europe.”

Sneška Quaedvlieg – Mihailović gave the floor to Victoria Hislop, the European with two passports – as he characteristically said – asking her “how he defines the European way of life as a writer and a European citizen.

The British writer, who was granted Greek citizenship in 2020, replied “On February 22, the day the war started, we realized overnight, even though we had left Europe, that we felt like we belonged to the same house as Europe, that we are “A family. Many Britons did not consider themselves Europeans and did not recognize the influences in literature and the arts. And that was the reason for the limited education. Those involved in education should realize that weight should be given.”

Sneška Quaedvlieg – Mihailović recalled that the discussion was attended by two dedicated Europeans working for a European way of life, stressing that “no other Vice-President of the European Commission had a portfolio with such a title in a Europe”.

Margaritis Schoinas commented that “To see the path that Europe has taken we must start from the ashes of World War II. The portfolio of protection of the European way of life is a shield, an armor in these difficult times. Ukraine says “I have no doubt that by what I did the Ukrainians gained the right to join the European family”

Sneška Quaedvlieg – Mihailović addressed Victoria Hislop – with a question about healing the wounds of history through literature. “Telling the stories helps the reader to say that they should not happen again. Very often these stories focus on what is happening to families, women and children,” the author replied.

“Let’s find the thread that connects everything,” said Margaritis, borrowing the word “thread” from Victoria Hislop’s book of the same name, concluding that “Europe must become a thought that must become an emotion. To move from our mind to our heart “.
