Delta and Ômicron variants can cause up to 2 thousand deaths in Manaus, says biologist

A year after experiencing the collapse of the health system, with people dying from Covid-19 in hospitals without oxygen, a group of researchers predicts that the city of Manaus may face a third wave of the pandemic.

A study, not yet reviewed by other scientists, published on the ResearchGate network indicates that the Amazon capital – which has less than 60% of the population fully vaccinated – may suffer a thousand more deaths from the coronavirus up to 85% immunization among residents.

In an interview with CNN, the biologist and one of the authors of the study, Lucas Ferrante, explains that this new wave predicted for the region is “generated by the Delta variant, leveraged by the Ômicron variant and complicated by the influenza outbreak”.

“Congestion of the health system by the flu and by these two variants tends to increase the mortality rate despite vaccination, which is at mediocre thresholds for the Amazon”, he declared.

“For Manaus, 1,500 to 2,000 deaths can still be expected with these two variants. And, as the health system becomes congested, the lethality of the coronavirus is aggravated”, he added.

According to the researcher, the peak of this resurgence of the pandemic in Amazonas should happen in about a month to a month and a half.
