The principles of Philippines will ban travelers from Malaysia and Thailand until at least the end of the month and impose stricter restrictions on the metropolitan area of the capital, Manila, to prevent the spread of the most contagious Delta variant of the new coronavirus, announced today the representative of the presidency.
The ban and the measures will take effect the day after Sunday and will last until the end of July, said spokesman Harry Rocke.
The Philippines has already banned the entry of travelers from eight other countries, including Indonesia and India.
To limit Delta’s transmission to the community, President Rodrigo Duterte has decided to put the metropolitan area of the capital – a vast metropolis of 16 areas, home to more than 13 million people – and four provinces under much stricter restrictions by the end of July.
Stadiums, exhibition and conference facilities, indoor tourist attractions, gyms, etc. will suspend their operation, while the customer base of the restaurants will decrease. Children 5-17 years old will not be allowed to leave the house.
To date, 47 Delta-type infections have been diagnosed in the Philippines, eight of which are active and three of which have resulted in the death of patients.
In all, with nearly 27,000 deaths from COVID-19 out of a total of 1.53 million SARS-CoV-2 infections, the Philippines has the second-highest death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in Southeast Asia, after Indonesia.
