The National Electric System Operator (ONS) projects a 2% increase in Brazil’s energy load for this month of March, when compared to the same period in 2021. The information is from the latest bulletin of the Monthly Operation Program (PMO) .
The ONS report relates the increase in energy load for this month to the improvement in the epidemiological scenario of Covid-19 in the country, which shows a downward trend in cases in most Brazilian states, according to the most recent bulletin from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). ).
According to the National Electric System Operator, the recovery of the economy in the country and the reactivation of industries result in greater demand for light.
The Southern Brazil subsystem shows the most expressive growth, with a 4% increase in cargo, according to the report. In practice, the expectation is that 13,536 average Megawatts (MW) will be produced in the region in March.
Soon after, the plants in the Northeast of the country appear, which will have a 3.8% increase in demand. The North of the country should register a high of 0.2%. The results correspond, respectively, to 13,247 MW and 5,942 average MW.
In relation to the Southeast/Midwest subsystem, an increase of 1.2% is expected in March 2022, when compared to the same month of the previous year. This is the largest absolute increase in demand in the country, although in percentage terms it is not the highest result. The subsystem, which concentrates 70% of Brazil’s energy load, should produce 42,983 MW this month.
Despite the good energy results in the indicator in March, electricity demand is still lower than expected by ONS specialists.
The bulletin points out that “the performance of the load over the first months of the year has still been influenced by the uncertainty in the economy”, by the possibility of future variants of Covid-19.
“Cargo performance over the first few months of the year has reflected the recovery, however, still cautiously. Recent publications show a certain deceleration of demand in the industry, due to the persistence of production bottlenecks that put pressure on costs”, highlights the ONS.
Last year, the activation of thermoelectric plants due to the lack of rain made the country raise the flag of water scarcity. Although an increase in natural gas is expected due to the war in Ukraine, researchers interviewed by the CNNfor the time being, discard effects for the electricity bill of Brazilians.
The economist at FGV Diogo Lisbona stated that the greater energy demand in the country will not be passed on to the population, despite the possible increase in the price of natural gas.
In the same sense, the professor of water resources at Coppe/UFRJ Paulo Canedo points out that energy in the country, with the improvement in the level of reservoirs, is less dependent on thermoelectric plants that use natural gas, since the volume of rains resumed work of hydroelectric plants.
In August 2021, due to water scarcity, data from the ONS indicated that power generation by thermoelectric plants hit a record in Brazil.
At the time, around 20,970 average megawatts (MWmed) were generated, surpassing the previous record recorded in July (18,625 MWmed).
