Dementia cases in China grow faster than in the rest of the world

The cases of Alzheimer’s And other dementia are growing faster in China than the global average, according to a study published on Wednesday (7) in the newspaper Plos One.

Node workresearchers at Fudan University in China have analyzed more than three decades of global health data at the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), a public database created by institutions such as the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The study found that between 1990 and 2021, the cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s in China tripled, while global cases doubled. In addition, researchers have found that women have a general load of higher disease, partly due to the higher life expectancy, but men have slightly higher mortality rates by the condition.

The study has also designed trends for the next 15 years using statistical models, suggesting that dementia rates will continue to increase, especially in China, unless more effective interventions are implemented.

Among the risk factors for dementia, the study showed that the high level of blood sugar from diabetes is now the main preventable risk factor for dementia worldwide, including China. Smoking and high body weight are also important factors, especially among men.

In addition, the study’s authors have concluded that the increase in dementia and Alzheimer’s rates in China is being driven by population growth and age group changes. However, they reinforce that measures such as reducing high blood sugar and smoking, especially among the elders, can slow the increase in dementia cases.
