Democrats are desperate over President Joe Biden’s debate performance CNN on Thursday night (27). Some in the group raised questions about whether he should continue to be the party’s candidate in the November US presidential election.
Biden appeared on stage with a soft, hesitant voice. He struggled to get some points across and ceded ground on issues like abortion, where Democrats have an advantage.
It only took a few minutes for Democrats to realize how bad the situation was becoming.
“Biden looks and sounds terrible. He is incoherent,” said a Democrat who worked in the Biden administration.
“Horrible,” said another Democratic operative.
And one Democrat who worked on election campaigns said simply: “We’re f*cked.”
The looming question as the debate approached was almost existential: Should anyone lead the Democratic ticket?
“It’s hard to argue that Biden should be our nominee,” said one operative who has worked on campaigns at all levels for more than a decade.
This one debate was historic for many reasons, but not least because it is taking place before each American is formally nominated in their respective conventions.
The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 19 in Chicago.
Democrats have spent much of the past year arguing over Biden’s chances of defeating Trump in an election that many see as existential and one that will decide the very survival of American democracy.
But Biden himself was determined to take on Trump, even saying directly: “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I would be running.”
No serious Democratic challenger has stepped forward to run against Biden, and at this point in the campaign, he would have to decide to step down if Democrats choose another candidate. If Biden withdrew, the Democratic nomination would be decided in plenary.
Democrats were even talking about who it might be: “If I were Gavin (Newsom) or Gretchen (Whitmer), I’d be making calls tonight,” one said.
Historical debate
The CNN debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump is the first of the 2024 presidential race, reviving the confrontation between the Democrat and the Republican for the White House.
In a historic event, this is the first time that a sitting president and a former president have debated in the United States.
The debate takes place at the CNN studios in Atlanta, in the state of Georgia.
