Dendias from London: We promote Greece’s candidacy in the Security Council

“I am back in the United Kingdom, first to see the ambassadors who are accredited in Athens (and based in London) in an effort to promote our candidacy for the United Nations Security Council,” he said. Greek correspondents in London Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, on the occasion of his visit to the British capital. “And secondly”, as he said, “to inform them about the Greek positions on a number of issues”. He noted that he will do the same tomorrow in Rome.

At the same time, as he pointed out, on the occasion of his visit “he will meet with the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Harris, as it is known that Liz Tras is in isolation because of covid”. Among the topics of “discussion with the Minister of State, Harris”, as Mr. Dendias said, will be the implementation of the protocol that we signed with Liz Tras a few weeks ago. “How will we be able to implement it and how will we, from its implementation, be able to gain the most from both the Greek side and the United Kingdom,” the Greek minister stressed.

This is a historic agreement signed after the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU and aims to strengthen the ties between the two countries, covering a wide range of issues such as defense, trade, tourism, shipping and more generally what is interested in the relations between the two states.

According to diplomatic sources, among the issues on their agenda are developments in Ukraine, the Western Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. The Cyprus issue will also be discussed, as well as issues concerning the two countries focusing on the implementation of the “Memorandum of Understanding for the Strategic Bilateral Framework” signed by Greece and the United Kingdom in October.

Finally, he reiterated that “the United Kingdom remains a major global player. And any attempt to contact the British government is of great importance to us, the Greek government, the Mitsotakis government,” he said.

It is worth noting that Mr. Dendias’s visit to London is the third in a few months, a fact that underlines the special importance that Greece attaches to the strengthening of ties with the United Kingdom after his departure from the European Union, he told APE. – MPE senior diplomatic source.
