The number of probable dengue cases in the state of Rio de Janeiro is ten times above the maximum limit expected for this time of year. The situation has remained at the same level for more than three weeks in a row. Level 3 of coping with the disease, the highest determined by the State Department of Health (SES), represents a public health emergency.
According to the panel that monitors cases in the state, there are 117,162 probable records until March 11th. Of these, 3,313 required hospitalization. 31 deaths from dengue were confirmed.
Among the areas of Rio de Janeiro that are of greatest concern due to the high incidence are the Metropolitan Region, Baixada Litorânea, Ilha Grande Bay and the south center of the state.
Beds
Although the state continues to show an upward trend in the number of cases of the disease, the secretariat does not identify a consistent increase in the bed occupancy rate, nor does it consider the number of cases of suspected dengue cases in Emergency Care Units (UPA) to be stable.
The Middle ParaÃba region, which covers the municipalities of Barra do PiraÃ, Barra Mansa, Itatiaia, Pinheiral, PiraÃ, Porto Real, Quatis, Resende, Rio Claro, Rio das Flores, Valença and Volta Redonda, was the first to show a worsening in epidemiological situation, and now shows a reduction in the number of cases.
More than half of the case records occurred in the capital. The city of Rio has 59,776 notifications. Four deaths were recorded in the city.
