Dengue cases increase 189% in Brazil in 2022; learn how to prevent disease

Brazil has a significant increase in dengue cases , according to the most recent epidemiological bulletin from the Ministry of Health. The data, which consider the records of the disease until the first week of September, indicate that there was an increase of 189.1% in cases compared to the same period in 2021. Until September 5, 1,337,413 cases were recorded. probable cases of dengue in the country.

Experts claim that weekly basic care contribute to preventing the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

This year, the region Midwest has the highest incidence rate of dengue, with 1,867.3 cases/100,000 inhabitants, followed by the following regions: South (1,018.0 cases/100,000 inhab.), Southeast (494.4 cases/100,000 inhab.), Northeast (398.5 cases/100 thousand inhab.) and North (227.6 cases/100 thousand inhab.).

The municipalities that presented the highest records of probable cases of dengue were: Brasilia (DF), with 62,265 cases, Goiânia (GO), with 49,675 cases, Joinville (SC), with 21,365, Aparecida de Goiânia (GO), with 21,164 cases, Araraquara (SP), with 20,937 cases and Anápolis (GO), with 19,881.

According to the ministry, 1,304 cases of severe dengue and 16,114 dengue cases with warning signs in the country in 2022. So far, 854 deaths from dengue have been confirmed, 737 by laboratory criteria and 117 by epidemiological clinical criteria. The states with the highest number of deaths were: São Paulo (259), Goiás (111), Paraná (96), Santa Catarina (88) and Rio Grande do Sul (66). Another 227 deaths remain under investigation.

Other arboviruses

Data from the Ministry of Health also point to increases in other arboviruses, such as Zika and chikungunya, which are also transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

To date, 9,916 probable cases of Zika in the country, an incidence rate of 4.6 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. The data represent a 21.1% increase in the number of cases compared to 2019 and 98.8% compared to 2021. According to the bulletin, no deaths from the disease were reported in the country in 2022.

About chikungunya , 162,407 probable cases were recorded this year. Compared to 2019, there was an increase of 35.8% for the same period analyzed. When compared to the year 2021, there was an increase of 89.4% cases until the first week of September. This year, the Northeast region had the highest incidence (243.7 cases/100,000 inhab.), followed by the Midwest (34.2 cases/100,000 inhab.) and North (25.3 cases/100,000 inhab.) .).

From egg to adult, the developmental cycle of the Aedes aegypti takes seven to ten days. Therefore, weekly intervention can interrupt this process and significantly reduce the incidence of diseases.

“Each female can lay up to 1,500 eggs, so it is important to look at the house with ‘mosquito eyes’, looking for any and all places that accumulate water and can be used for vector reproduction”, says Denise Valle, a researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute. (IOC/Fiocruz).

Any container that allows stagnant water to accumulate can become a potential breeding ground for the Aedes aegypti. Tires, plant pots, water tanks, refrigerator trays, gutters, gallons, buckets, bottles and rubbish are among the main mosquito breeding sites.

“The greater the number of mosquitoes, the greater the chances of transmission of these viruses. Every year we reinforce the message that the female Aedes spreads her eggs in different places. We cannot calm down and end the scan if eggs or larvae are already found in the first environment. In fact, we should be even more alert and look more closely at nearby places, as there will certainly be other breeding sites”, says Denise.

To facilitate the weekly routine of checking the main mosquito outbreaks, researchers from Fiocruz developed a booklet called “10 minutes against Aedes”. The material available online highlights the points that need attention in the residences that can be marked after each survey.
