The Canadian director Denis Villeneuve 56, said in an interview with the Vanity Fair podcast that, despite working on the script for “The Dune Messiah” the films will not be a trilogy. He explained that “Dune” (2021) and “Dune: Part 2” (2024) adapt Frank Hebert’s first work, and the third may be independent.
“First, it’s important for people to understand that for me it was really a diptych. It was really a pair of films that are an adaptation of the first book. That’s done and dusted,” he said.
“If I do a third one, which is in the process of being written, it won’t be like a trilogy. It’s weird to say this, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity,” he continued.
Previously, the filmmaker had already spoken of his desire to adapt the second book in Herbert’s saga, stating that it would be his last work in the universe. The title has not yet been confirmed by Warner Bros.
If “The Dune Messiah “If it does happen, it could take a while. Villeneuve has spent the past six years working on “Dune” and “Dune: Part 2” and said at a press conference in South Korea last year that there was “no gap” between the two productions and that he will want to have some space before the third.
The actress Zendaya who stars in the first two films alongside Timothée Chalamet stated in a recent interview that he would be willing to participate in a third film.
“Would I accept? I mean, of course. When Denis calls, it’s a ‘yes’ from me,” he said.
“I’m excited to see what happens. I started reading ‘Dune Messiah’ and I was like, ‘Wow, I’m only shooting the first movie. Let me go back to the first one.’ It’s a lot to process, but there are no better hands to take care of it.” [das adaptações] with love and affection than Denis’s.”
The titles are based on the literary saga of Frank Herbertconsisting of six books. The first book was already adapted for the cinema before, in 1984, by David Lych. See below a comparison of the characters from Villeneuve and Lynch’s adaptation.
