THE Denmark, the first European country to discontinued the AstraZeneca vaccine for Covid-19 in April, announced on Monday (03/05) that it will do the same for the company’s single-dose vaccine Johnson & Johnson, due to possible serious side effects.
Both the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the World Health Organization have given the green light to this vaccine.
“The Danish National Health Authority has concluded that the benefits of using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine for Covid-19 do not outweigh the risk of a potential side effect, VITT (a very rare type of thrombosis) in people receiving the vaccine. “As a result, the Danish mass vaccination program for Covid-19 will continue without the Johnson & Johnson vaccine,” the statement said.
To date, Denmark has not approved the use of the Janssen vaccine in Europe. It is estimated that today’s decision will delay the immunization campaign in the country, where the pandemic is considered to be “under control”, by four weeks. Most people in high-risk groups as well as healthcare professionals have already been vaccinated with other drugs. According to the latest announcement, 23.4% of Danes have received a first dose of vaccine and 11.5% have received a second.
