Denmark, celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee postponed

There will be no big celebrations in Denmark in January for the 50th anniversary of the reign of Margrethe II. The Royal House itself made it known with a press release on its official website. The queen had ascended the throne on January 14, 1972, and for the anniversary, Kongehuset had been planning the initiatives for months, anticipated by the spread of the official photo of the Jubilee. But now, given the Covid situation, and considering that the sovereign wants all the Danish people to be able to participate in the celebrations, it has been decided to postpone everything to late summer 2022, when – hopefully – the health emergency will be over.

So no crowds in the square in front of the Amalienborg Palace to witness the Changing of the Guard and the greeting of the Queen, who should have looked out on the balcony together with the whole royal family. No lunch at Copenhagen City Hall. No function in the Cathedral of Our Lady, the most important Lutheran church in the Danish capital. AND no gala dinner at Christiansborg Palace. At least for now.

However, the anniversary cannot be completely silent, so at the Palazzo they are trying to organize at least more events for that day restricted and intimate, including a meeting of the State Council, the laying of flowers on the tomb of King Frederik IX in Roskilde Cathedral, and other initiatives to be announced in early January.

The subjects will also have the opportunity to wish the Queen their wishes, although not in person: during the week of the Jubilee a virtual bulletin board will be open on the website of the Royal House of Denmark, on which whoever wishes can send their tributes to the Sovereign. It is not excluded, knowing the Queen’s sense of freedom, that she responds to the messages herself.
