Denmark halts Covid-19 mass vaccination program after controlling pandemic

Denmark became the first country to stop the mass coronavirus vaccination program, stressing that this is a development that is coming as the virus is now under control.

“Spring has arrived, vaccination coverage of the Danish population is high and the pandemic has reversed,” said the Danish Health Authority.

“Therefore, the National Health Council is now ending its extensive vaccination efforts against Covid-19 for this period,” he said. People will not be invited for vaccination from May 15, he said, although everyone will be able to complete their vaccinations.

The vaccination campaign against Covid in Denmark began shortly after Christmas 2020. About 4.8 million people have been vaccinated, the health authority said, while more than 3.6 million people have received the booster vaccine.

At the same time, many people have been infected since the Omicron variant became the dominant strain of the virus, which means that levels of immunity among the population are high.

“We are in a good position,” commented Bolette Soborg of the National Health Council.

“We have good control of the epidemic, which seems to be receding. Hospital admission rates are stable and we also expect them to decrease soon. Therefore, we are completing the mass vaccination program against Covid-19.”

Soborg insisted that the public could still be vaccinated during the spring and summer, if they so wished, and that vaccination sites would remain open across the country.

The Danish Health and Medicines Authority has said that Covid-19 vaccination may need to be re-vaccinated in the autumn.
