Denmark relaxes coronavirus restrictions despite new case record

Denmark recorded a record number of coronavirus infections today, as cinemas, museums and other cultural venues reopen after a one-month lockout.

The country reported 28,780 new cases in 24 hours, with the number of Covid-19 hospitalizations rising to 802, the highest in a year.

However, health authorities said earlier this month that the now-dominant Omicron variant was milder than initially thought and that about 29% of patients admitted were hospitalized for reasons other than COVID-19.

After a peak of 82 patients on January 6, the number of people admitted to the ICU with coronavirus was steadily declining, reaching 52 today.

As a result, lawmakers agreed last week to ease restrictions, including the reopening of theaters, cinemas, museums, amusement parks and botanical gardens, and to allow a limited number of spectators and sporting events indoors and outdoors.
