Denmark: Society finds it difficult to accept women in power, says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who was attacked by a man last week, claimed today that female politicians are being criticized because of their gender. In her first public appearance a week after her attack, the 46-year-old prime minister said: “It is more difficult for women to be accepted in power than men,” she said during a political festival on the island of Bornholm, the beginning of the return of her in public appearances. “I wasn’t very good at referring to and talking about myself as a woman” in politics, she noted. “I think some of the criticism that Helle (Tørning-Schmidt s.a. Denmark’s first female head of government) and I have received has to do with our gender,” Frederiksen stressed. In 2019, at the age of 41, Frederiksen became the youngest prime minister of a Nordic country and retained her position after her party won the 2022 parliamentary elections. […]
